BSP Scout Nursery Course

Course Description: To provide Scouts the knowledge of actual plant propagation.

Number of Scouts Required: At least 40 Scouts per session

Instructors/Facilitators/ Merit Badge Counselors: Staffing ratio of 1:10 Scouts

Course Objectives: At the end of the course, Scouts will be able to:

1. Learn the importance of trees in our environment

2. Demonstrate actual plant propagation

3. Earn the ”Go Green!” merit badge

4. Bring home his own bag of sown seeds (12 seeds minimum)

BSP Go Green Program of Activities

The following is the detailed program of activities that Scouts must undergo in preparation to earning their Go Green, Grow Green and Earn Green Merit Badges.

B	Tree Seed Management And Development	- Through a lecture/demonstration method, Scouts will learn: 1. the life cycle of a tree 2. the various sources of seeds 3. tree seed management. 4. how seeds develop and 5. to identify good quality seeds.	45 mins	1:10
A	Sowing of Seeds	- Hands on demonstration, Scouts will learn and experience the proper sowing of seeds in a seed box.	45 mins.	1:10
S	Potting of Seedling	- Hands on demonstration: Scouts will learn pricking and potting of seedlings into seedling bags;	45 mins.	1:10
E	Sapling Transfer	- Hands on demonstration: Scouts will learn how to; 1. re-bag seedlings into sapling bags; 2. learn proper seedling and sapling care 3. maintenance in the plant depot area.	45 mins.	1:10
	Evaluation	- Activity evaluation & Summing up/ Distribution of a bag of sown seeds per Scout/ “and duly signed Go Green MB card	15 mins	1:10

A) Go Green MB: This is the first step known as ”Go Green” where a Scout will attend BSP sanctioned activities to learn about the life cycle of a tree, from Seed to Sapling. The Scout will start with the identification and choosing of the seed, sowing seeds, potting sprouts into seedling bags and transferring seedlings into sapling bags, all in a fun, hands-on, “learning by doing” activity, lasting only a couple of hours. The Scout will earn this MB when he successfully completes the requirements at the end of his Go Green activity. He will also be allowed to bring home a bag of sown seeds, (at least a dozen seeds) so the Scout can continue into the Grow Green MB Series.

B) Grow Green MB; This is the second step known as ”Grow Green” where a Scout will take home from the Go Green activity a bag of sown seeds (at least a dozen seeds) or if there is no Go Green activity organized in the local council you may proceed and complete Grow Green merit badge requirements and earn automatically the “Go Green merit Badge. The Scout will be encouraged to start his own little nursery in his home (backyard, balcony, window, etc.) The Scout will have a copy of the MB requirements where he will make a scrap book to document the growth progress of his seeds, seedlings and saplings. The completion of this MB will last many months up to a couple of years, as the Scout will have to care for and watch grow, his trees. Hence the nomenclature “Grow Green”. The Scout will also be required to plant at least one (1) of his saplings in or around his home, community or school ground.

C) Earn Green MB; This is the third step known as ”Earn Green” where a Scout will bring his grown and healthy saplings to a (1) BSP sanctioned TREE PLANTING activity, at a BSP designated tree planting site or (2) sell his saplings to private entitities/individuals officially registered as BSP saplings buyer. Here, the Scout will be able to monetize his product and long term effort, by selling, his saplings at a predetermined market price based on the height and species of the saplings. The Scout will also participate in the actual planting of his saplings. After this activity, the Scout would have earned the Earn Green MB. The principle of the Earn Green MB is to use donor funds to fund the purchase of saplings directly from the Scouts and consequently cause the Scouts to learn principles of business such as Marketing, Return on Capital, Cost of Labor, Transportation, Logistics etc. For private buyers, scouts would be able to earn and save to pay BSP registration and/or his participation to Scouting activities.

“Go Green! Go for the Real Thing” as a BSP program

The Boy Scouts of the Philippines under the Program Division created an activity which is related to the said project. The concept is to develop a series of complimentary Merit Badges (MBs) that will develop a Scout into a proactive environmentalist, nature lover and entrepreneur.

Go Green and Grow Green are now required MBs and Earn Green is an elective MB.

These Merit Badges are open to any KAB, Boy, Senior and Rover Scouts regardless of their advancement rank. After the completion of the three Merit Badges, the Scout may be awarded a “Go Green Scout” Neckerchief.

Program Objectives

After completing the “Go Green! Go for the Real Thing” program, Scouts will be able to:

1. Demonstrate the proper way of plant propagation

2. Realize the importance of trees to protect the environment and preventing global warming

3. Earn the “Go Green! Go for the Real Thing” Merit Badges

4. Receive the “Go Green Scout” Neckerchief.
